Sunbeam Pug

Aside from the cooler temperatures, there really isn’t much that The Pug appreciates about winter anymore.

It gets TOO cold for her older little bones to handle, and then add in the slush and the salt and the wind and the tonnes of wet snow, and I have a very grumpy little soul on my hands.

img_8493-jpg-2

The one thing winter does bring us, however (aside from relief from those 40 degree summer days), is Lola’s beloved sunbeam.

When I see the sunbeam come in the window, I pull out one of Lola’s beds, and position it just so before I call her over to let her know her winter bestie has arrived.

img_8458-jpg-2

Someone wanted company in the sunbeam the other day, though, and she wouldn’t stay on her bed unless I was there with her, so I picked up my work and…

…well, I’ve had tea in worse places.

I think.

Snooze well, little one. Mama is right here beside you.

Lola Pug and the Cicada

I told myself I wouldn’t go on anymore about the remarkably hot and humid summer we’ve been having, but I’m going to change my mind in three…two…one….

Pugs are ultra-sensitive to heat, so someone has had to be inside a lot these days, relaxing (and complaining) by the air conditioner.

Now, Lola P and I might be limited in what kind of mischief we can get up to right now, but we have still managed to find a few ways to amuse ourselves in this weather muck. We have even managed to make a few new friends.

She might have been a bit upset that I encouraged her new friend to zip away before she got to know him better (or to see if he was tasty), but NEVER FEAR, because soon after this meeting, we found a little cousin of his who I could more formally introduce her to.

This one wasn’t buzzing all up in her business like the first cicada was, so it’s pretty safe to say that Lola P knew she had been duped, and this wasn’t her original buddy, after all.

We are both REALLY looking forward to autumn and the cooler days and nights that are coming, but in the meantime, the gorgeous summertime call of the cicada…and Lola’s quest to befriend one (or snack on one, I’m still not entirely sure which it is), will soothe us and remind us to be grateful for the little things, even when the Humidex hits 43.

Pokemon Pug!

Like all great relationships, Lola Pug and I take turns at being “The Sensible One”. I waggle my finger at her when she wants to eat cigarette butts on the sidewalk, and she lets me know (loudly) whenever I have my eyeballs glued to my phone (and not on her) for too long.

But my pretense of having any maturity and good sense flies away faster than a frog in a tornado when something especially sparkly lands in my lap, and this past week delivered a pretty sparkly distraction for many of us.

IMG_4545-1

“Many” meaning most definitely not Lola Pug or Stanley.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t keep introducing her to the little creatures who are popping up in our ‘hood.

IMG_4805-1-2

There’s some sort of family resemblance to this one….

IMG_4627

Looks as if she’s warming up to the Zubat.

IMG_4628

Should I be worried?

Oh. Maybe THIS is her soulmate. She seems to be interested in it, at least.

IMG_4802

Yah. I think we have the winner here.

At least I think we do. It appears as if Lola begs to differ….

IMG_4804-1-1

The super hot summer we’re having in Lola P’s hometown has meant that we can’t be out and exploring as much as we want to, but I will sure keep my eyes peeled for new creatures to introduce to Lola.

Has your fur kid met any Pokemon yet? Which one do you think they resemble most?

And most pressingly…which Pokemon above do you think Lola Pug most resembles?

Happy hunting!

The Summer of NOPE.

Every hot and humid day is a Day of NOPE here at Casa Lola (for both of us, if I’m being honest), but this summer is turning out to be particularly hilarious. Well, for me, at least.

As Lola P gets older, she has wisely decided to not put up with the BS anymore, and she really is hitting her stride this year.

Time to go for a walk?

IMG_3068

NOPE.

Come on. Just a little walk?

IMG_3229

NOPE.

We might meet some friendly dogs and their people!

IMG_3231

NOPE.

Puppy kisses?

IMG_3274_2

NOPE.

Life-sustaining filtered and chilled water?

IMG_3058

NOPE.

Well, I can see how this summer is going to play out.

At least I’ll be laughing a lot while we sit doing nothing.

Hm. Maybe she’s onto something, actually….

Have a great week ahead, Possums! Stay cool and see you next Sunday!

Day 7: Pug In Nature Photography Challenge

Just as I was really starting to have some fun!

The FINAL DAY of the Challenge, and I am SO SAD that it’s over. Or is it???

Lola Pug and I have a LOT of adventures together, and I’m really grateful that you read along and share some of them with us.

Today, to mark the end of the challenge, one of my favourite shots from an adventure out where they grow them mountains big and all pretty like, and where sometimes the tides go out REALLLLLY low, and mama drags HRH out to have some “fun” for a little while.

DSC_0023

Because I don’t want this to end, I’m passing this challenge along. If you choose to do it, OMP, what fun it will be. If not, totally cool beans. No sweat. And make it your own challenge!

We challenge our friends: the wonderful Southern Fried Pugs, the gorgeous Ruby the AiredaleYoshi, Not Sophie, and overall funky faerie, Cat, and finally, Hailey and Zaphod.

Until then – we will see you again in a week with a fresh new adventure to share!

Day 6: Pug In Nature Photography Challenge

So, *technically*, this isn’t water.

IMG_3646

It might be something even worse.

ISN’T NATURE WONDERFUL, PUG?!?!

I didn’t know that pugs had muscles in all of those places.

Come and join el Disgusto here tomorrow for the FINAL DAY of the Pug in Nature Photography Challenge! We’re going to miss this!

What is the Pug in Nature Photography Challenge?

I was recently challenged by Lola’s Uncle Deji to post a nature photo once a day for a week. These types of challenges don’t usually appeal to me, but then I thought that the world might be a slightly lovelier place if there were more photos of nature floating around. And then I realised that it would be an even more lovely place if there were more photos of Lola Pug in nature floating around.

So over the next week, I happily present to you daily updates of Lola Pug. In nature.

Lola and nature go together like me and camping.

Which is to say, not at all.

So this might be fun.

Day 2: Pug In Nature Photography Challenge

Day 2 of the Challenge calls for a little close up, no?

Lola P is NOT a fan of the wetness, so usually lakes and oceans and even damp spots on the sidewalk are outside of her tolerance levels. But once in a very blue moon the stars align, and someone enjoys cooling her tootsies off.

As I recall, this was a fairly warm day, and we had been trekking around the seashore for quite some time when we found a gorgeously shallow and warm part of the water to wade around in.

And…well…someone didn’t quite understand why I was so excited that she wasn’t screaming to be picked up.

Oh, you make my heart melt, little one.

Come back tomorrow for Day 3’s adventure in nature!

Day 1

Lola Pug and I travel up to the more northern parts of our province quite a bit in the summer. We generally have to watch out for the bigger ticket nature-related issues up there – rattlesnakes, giant hawks, and black bears – but now we have to give extra concern to the little killers up there. Lyme disease-bearing ticks. *sigh* Nature.

Despite all of nature basically wanting to kill us (those snakes can SWIM, by the way), it sure is pretty, and Lola Pug and I actually feel quite at home by the water on the rocks.

Come back tomorrow for Day 2 of the Pug in Nature Photo Challenge!

Florida Pug

So have you had time to take a guess at what Lola Pug got up to on her exciting trip to the land of palm trees and manatees?

When we last left her, HRH was rather happily soaking up some much needed vitamin D…

…but it wasn’t ALL about sunshine and relaxing.

Lola Pug was active and sprightly…

…she moved around the pool like a sunflower capturing the optimal sunshine angles…

…she went for exciting walks that involved a lot of exercise…

…she entertained friends and listened to what were clearly some thrilling discussions…

All in all, I think I had a very happy pug on my hands.

But even the best of things must come to an end. I broke the news to Lola Pug gently, just as her Auntie was giving her a post-yogurt skritch…

It’s time to go home, sweetie.

Our visit was short, but it was just what we needed to recharge our batteries and feel a bit of warmth on our skin before returning to the long winter ahead.

Bye bye, beautiful ocean and beaches and sunshine…

…and hello winter.

You might be cold and frosty, dear city, but it warms my heart to see you again.

I might be the only one who feels that way, though.

IMG_2994

So I guess I had better get my thinking cap on and line up some new adventures before someone cries mutiny, and teaches herself how to book her own flights.

Wishing everyone in the North American snowbelt many warm, palm tree dreams this frosty weekend!

Now, little pug. What are we going to get up to next….

Bedstede Pugs on Bowen Island

To mark Lola Pug’s final full day on Bowen Island (at least on this trip), we took the pugs on a lovely, chilly beach walk, then bundled them up into the car to get a few provisions in town before heading home to warm up.

Never one to be outwardly impressed with much of anything, Lola Pug really takes all of her adventures in stride.

A quick stop off at my new favourite place on the Island…

…and we were all ready to head home. Even Miss Roxy was pining for a nap.

And I do think that Lola Pug was dreaming of warmer, drier places as she watched the goings on.

Now, Roxy’s people have something very special in their home that is a *perfect* way to warm up and relax after a winter adventure, and I couldn’t wait to get back to the house to try it out.

In our last post, I asked how YOU like to warm up, and both Hailey and Zaphod and our Southern Fried Pugs friends said that warming up by a fire (with bonus marshmallows) are their favourite things to do…but at Hacienda RoxSea, there is this amazing little nook that I had been ACHING to jump into.

This thing on the left isn’t a painting on the wall…and it’s not exactly a room….

…it’s an honest to goodness sleeping nook!

Bedstedes are Dutch, and I think they might just be the best thing I’ve ever seen in a house. THANK YOU, NETHERLANDS!

The pugs wholeheartedly agreed with me. Although that kind of makes sense, as it was the Dutch who first brought pugs over to Europe, and…wait…were bedstedes made specifically FOR cuddling with pugs? Or maybe just for pugs, themselves.

They might well have been, because Lola wasn’t too thrilled at the prospect of me invading her private mattress room.

With a little bit of rearranging, and the addition of a blanket along with the lovely Roxy…

…and maybe a little bit of wool for me to play with, we all settled in for a most excellent coze.

The lure of the cozy bedstede is so powerful, that Roxy’s Dad decided to join us, and we had a glorious time reading books, cuddling the pugs, chatting away and warming up.

Well. Some of us had a glorious time.

Oh, Lola, sharing isn’t *that* miserable, is it?

I have an awful lot to live up to now, as I believe I will now be expected to construct a bedstede at Casa Lola on our return. But only big enough for *one* pug, right, Lola Bean?

But we have a few more adventures to go on before we can rest at home, little one.

Stay tuned – The Pug is on the move!
