Sunbeam Pug

Aside from the cooler temperatures, there really isn’t much that The Pug appreciates about winter anymore.

It gets TOO cold for her older little bones to handle, and then add in the slush and the salt and the wind and the tonnes of wet snow, and I have a very grumpy little soul on my hands.

The one thing winter does bring us, however (aside from relief from those 40 degree summer days), is Lola’s beloved sunbeam.

When I see the sunbeam come in the window, I pull out one of Lola’s beds, and position it just so before I call her over to let her know her winter bestie has arrived.

img_8458-jpg-2

Someone wanted company in the sunbeam the other day, though, and she wouldn’t stay on her bed unless I was there with her, so I picked up my work and…

…well, I’ve had tea in worse places.

I think.

Snooze well, little one. Mama is right here beside you.

Day 5: Pug In Nature Photography Challenge

OMP. Skipped a day, but I promise it won’t mean fewer photos.

Nature. Lola Pug.

How about a beach again?

This time, let’s go south of the border. Perhaps a little Lake Michigan can convince HRH that water isn’t an evil force of nature.

IMG_1172

Or not.

Frozen in disgust that Nature has the audacity to dampen her delicate tootsies yet again.

I’ll have to come up with something better tomorrow, perhaps.

Stay tuned!

What is the Pug in Nature Photography Challenge?

I was recently challenged by Lola’s Uncle Deji to post a nature photo once a day for a week. These types of challenges don’t usually appeal to me, but then I thought that the world might be a slightly lovelier place if there were more photos of nature floating around. And then I realised that it would be an even more lovely place if there were more photos of Lola Pug in nature floating around.

So over the next week, I happily present to you daily updates of Lola Pug. In nature.

Lola and nature go together like me and camping.

Which is to say, not at all.

So this might be fun.

Sunbeam Dream Pug

This winter has been long and very cold – the coldest on record in Lola Pug’s hometown. The brutal cold means that The Pug and I haven’t really been able to get out and about on any adventures in our favourite place – the great outdoors.

But for all of the cold, it has been crisp, remarkably slush-free (dark and slushy winters are the WORST), and it has been bright. Oh, so bright. Sunshine almost every day.

But there comes a breaking point for everyone, and The Pug reached her’s about a month ago.

IMG_3111

We tried everything to keep ourselves amused indoors. Squirrel log…stuffy toys…Karateo Dog…even indoor disk throwing, just to get a taste of remembrance of warmer days past.

IMG_3438

But both Lola and I eventually slumped into a bit of a winter blargh, and a certain little pug became a master of her new, favourite winter sport…sunbeam basking.

First, you have to find a sunbeam…

…then you have to position yourself juuuuust so…

…and once you have achieved the optimal angle…let the basking begin….

A couple of days ago, I noticed that the temperature outside was reaching a less face-breaking level, so I woke a disbelieving HRH up from her sunbeam splendour…

IMG_3624

…and carried her outside. I found a spot where the temperature and the sunbeams were juuuust right…

IMG_3595

…and all was once again right with the world.

It feels a bit too early to welcome a new season in, so we will simply say YAY for warmer weather, and OH MY GOD, FINALLY we can go outside again.

Even Lola’s friend, Donald, has a bounce in his step with the warmer weather.

It is coming, my poppets. Spring – with all of it’s mud and glory – is just around the corner.

Get your raincoats ready!

…but we won’t focus on that just yet.

Time to find a sunbeam to dream in.

Until next week!

Florida Pug

So have you had time to take a guess at what Lola Pug got up to on her exciting trip to the land of palm trees and manatees?

When we last left her, HRH was rather happily soaking up some much needed vitamin D…

…but it wasn’t ALL about sunshine and relaxing.

Lola Pug was active and sprightly…

…she moved around the pool like a sunflower capturing the optimal sunshine angles…

…she went for exciting walks that involved a lot of exercise…

…she entertained friends and listened to what were clearly some thrilling discussions…

All in all, I think I had a very happy pug on my hands.

But even the best of things must come to an end. I broke the news to Lola Pug gently, just as her Auntie was giving her a post-yogurt skritch…

It’s time to go home, sweetie.

Our visit was short, but it was just what we needed to recharge our batteries and feel a bit of warmth on our skin before returning to the long winter ahead.

Bye bye, beautiful ocean and beaches and sunshine…

…and hello winter.

You might be cold and frosty, dear city, but it warms my heart to see you again.

I might be the only one who feels that way, though.

IMG_2994

So I guess I had better get my thinking cap on and line up some new adventures before someone cries mutiny, and teaches herself how to book her own flights.

Wishing everyone in the North American snowbelt many warm, palm tree dreams this frosty weekend!

Now, little pug. What are we going to get up to next….

Jet Set Pug

When last we left you, The Pug and I were leaving our dear friends on Bowen Island, British Columbia, and hurtling back through the air to Casa Lola.

But we weren’t headed home to rest. Nope. Not *quite* yet.

No sooner had we opened our front door and emptied our suitcases than we packed up again and headed straight back to the airport.

Where to this time, Pug?

Lola Pug really wasn’t impressed with my insistence that we embrace the jet-setting lifestyle, but she soon changed her mind when we landed at our next destination.

After a quick watering of the flowers, a certain someone ran out to her favourite spot in the entire state…

…and staked her claim on the spot that I suspected she would basically remain in for the duration of our trip.

Hey, no judgment here, Pug.

In fact, I’d advise you to soak up those winter rays as much as you can. We have a lot of winter left, and we have to grab our sunshine when we can!

We both proceeded to take a good, long nap, and got ourselves rested up for the week that lay ahead in this magical winter land of palm trees, geckos and sunshine.

Our adventures down south continue next week! Can you guess what we got up to on this trip?

Old Friends… New Friends….

The short reprieve in our humid summer weather has seen Lola Pug and me out and about in the neighbourhood, taking advantage of all of the friendly canine socialising that the more humane temperatures bring.

We were able to wander a bit further afield the other day, so I brought Lola to a park across the road from a friend’s house.

While sitting and waiting (otherwise known as “stalking”, if I must be honest), Trevor the Golden wandered into the park. Now, Lola Pug has a hate-on for most unknown Goldens, which baffles me, as her cousin and one of her friends from puppy hood are Goldens, so I expected fireworks from her.

Nope. Trevor was an instant love match for LP, and they sat together in mindful happiness for quite some time, watching the world go by.

Have I mentioned that Trevor is 15 years old? And he’s amazingly calm. A true gentleman. No wonder Lola fell in love with him instantly. (Oh, and his face isn’t weird – he was simply basking in a very bright sunbeam)

Now, back to that “stalking” thing.

I saw my friend’s door open, and it was the moment I had been waiting for.

It’s time to leave the peace of your new oldest friend to go and get some PUPPY LOVE, babygirl!

At all of nine weeks old, this is our newest, and possibly cutest neighbour puppy….

Those EARS! Those BAGGY LEGS! Those Frenchie LIPS!

Wee Choco did not initially appreciate my moving in for puppy kisses…

…but he soon changed his mind, and came in for a good nose gnaw.

The sour milk and beer smell of puppy breath is intoxicating to me.

Not so much for Lola Pug.

It was next to impossible to get a semi-decent photo of the two of them together, mostly due to the frenetic puppy-ness of one of the involved parties…

…but all frenetic things must eventually rest and recharge, and the littlest man eventually fell asleep in his new mama’s arms.

Alas, Trevor had left the park when we were done meeting and greeting our newest neighbour, so Lola didn’t get a chance to commiserate with him on the way home.

In time, perhaps Choco and Lola Pug will become better friends. Until then, he’s going to have a whole lot of neighbourhood love pouring down on his little self.

There’s nothing quite like some old friends and some new friends to make a weekend perfect.

Spring Sunbeam

Sometimes you have a week that just takes you by the throat and shakes you, and The Pug and I have had just that kind of week, albeit in very different ways.

A little bit of rest and recuperation on her part, and some tea and laughter on my side, and things seem to be coming back to what passes for normal in this crazy house.

More on all that from Lola’s side in next week’s post, but in the meantime, someone has managed to find one of the first sunbeams of Spring…

I am one with the sunbeam, mama.

…and I think I might have to join her.

Lola Pug suggests that you all find a sunbeam today, and nestle down in it – even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Happy Sunday, Happy Nap Day, and Happy Spring!

(We seem to be missing the Pug Thoughts feature today. I’ll figure it all out, but in the meantime, just imagine that Lola is meditating and that her mind is a peaceful, empty room…filled with kibble, of course.)

Polar Vortex Pug

It was inevitable.

The palm trees, the pool, the balmy glory…everything that is pug perfect…it couldn’t last forever. Well, at least not this year.

One, last memory of the glory and the beauty as we go from a red hibiscus…

…to a fluffy red parka with booties, and a pug who refuses to make eye contact with me.

The weather shock was just as huge and painful for both of us, but I’m the one left carrying the guilt and blame for bringing us back into this Hoth-like frozen landscape.

Someone seems to forget that I’m the one who also helped us escape to the warmer climate in the first place.

Ah, she breaks my heart. Looks like I’ve already started to save my pennies for the next trip down there.

Well. I guess I had better make up for this with a few pug-focussed adventures this week. Hmmm. Now what shall we get up to, Pug?

Snowbird Pug

When winter’s wrath hits town, little delicate greenhouse flowers like LP and I move out. Fast.

We’re both seasoned travellers, and I have to say, it’s a joy to be able to travel with the little Bean. (If you have any questions about travelling with your small dog, you should read a post I wrote for the Montreal Dog Blog a while back – right here.)

Goodbye Polar Vortex…

…hello SUNSHINE!

One of the first things I do when we land is throw our bags to the side and immediately drag our bare tootsies outside where there’s no snow, no salt and absolutely no need for socks.

The pool is a source of eternal fascination for Lola Pug, even though she *hates* getting wet, so we have to go out and check for fish…or manatees…or perhaps merpugs.

But the fascination with the pool soon gives way to The Pug’s favourite activity (after eating), and the basking begins.

…and basically doesn’t stop…

…until the sun goes down.

Happiness is, indeed, a warm puppy.

I don’t know how I’m going to break it to her that we can’t escape winter forever (although I’m seriously reconsidering those logistics), so we’ll just enjoy life right now as we should – one moment – and one glorious sunbeam – at a time.

Halloween Dress Rehearsal

We had a get together with the Griffies a little while ago so that the humans and the dogs could catch up on things – in our own, unique ways, of course.

As Halloween is coming up, we thought we would test out a few costumes. Purely for the dogs, of course. Not at all so we could laugh hysterically while we drank mimosas in the sunshine.

So, Lola. What do you think of our first pick for you?

Um. Yah.

Something about the way she’s looking at me tells me this might be a miss.

Even Boz and Clara were kinda careful around her when she was dressed as a fierce shark.

Clara seemed to be pretty content dressed up as a hot dog, so we tried it out on Lola…

…with even less success here.

Oh, what to do, Pug.

Halloween is only a few days away, and you can bet your fuzzy, little monkeyboots we’re all dressing up here again this year.

Back to the closet for us!
