Day 3: Pug In Nature Photography Challenge

Here’s a way-back flashback to when the Pug had nary a grey hair on her wee self.

This is more like it. Water in the far-off background.

Hm. My definition of “nature” seems to involve a lot of water.

Sorry, Pug.

At least she’s not near it again.

Yet.

Come back for Day 4 of the Challenge tomorrow!

What is the Pug in Nature Photography Challenge?

I was recently challenged by Lola’s Uncle Deji to post a nature photo once a day for a week. These types of challenges don’t usually appeal to me, but then I thought that the world might be a slightly lovelier place if there were more photos of nature floating around. And then I realised that it would be an even more lovely place if there were more photos of Lola Pug in nature floating around.

So over the next week, I happily present to you daily updates of Lola Pug. In nature.

Lola and nature go together like me and camping.

Which is to say, not at all.

So this might be fun.

Day 2: Pug In Nature Photography Challenge

Day 2 of the Challenge calls for a little close up, no?

Lola P is NOT a fan of the wetness, so usually lakes and oceans and even damp spots on the sidewalk are outside of her tolerance levels. But once in a very blue moon the stars align, and someone enjoys cooling her tootsies off.

As I recall, this was a fairly warm day, and we had been trekking around the seashore for quite some time when we found a gorgeously shallow and warm part of the water to wade around in.

And…well…someone didn’t quite understand why I was so excited that she wasn’t screaming to be picked up.

Oh, you make my heart melt, little one.

Come back tomorrow for Day 3’s adventure in nature!

10K Pug Run

This blog is all about the Adventures of Lola Pug, and those adventures can run both big and small. Lola P and I are lucky enough to live in a great part of a great city, and sometimes we only have to walk out of our front door to find something new and exciting.

That includes walking outside for someone’s early morning constitutional.

IMG_2713

While snuffling in the lawn, Lola’s eye was caught by an unusual amount of activity on our street, so she marched down to investigate.

IMG_2700

Slightly confused, but intrigued, she decided to follow the people (with me in tow) to see what all of the commotion was about…

IMG_2708

…and someone wasn’t pleased to discover that there was a better option to peeing out in the open on the grass. And no, Lola, we cannot have one of these installed on the lawn for you.

IMG_2715

Her confusion grew as we neared the starting line, both because of the number of people who were walking on our street, as well as…well…we were walking on the street!

IMG_2719

And so the Run season begins in this city. This particular run is super popular, as you can see. I think there were over 30,000 people here this year. And what a gorgeous day for it.

IMG_2722

GO, RUNNERS, GO!

We cheered the participants on, and Lola inspired them with her cuteness as I carried her back home so she could rest. All of that “inspiring other people” stuff sure can be exhausting for a senior gal.

We’ll leave the running and exertion to other people. For now. Pugs were meant to live the plush life, not the “rush” life, and there is a giant bed with someone’s name on it.

Happy Sunday to everyone, runners, tea sippers, and sleeper-inners, alike.

Belated Pug Birthday!

I carry all of the blame for this.

Lola P’s birthday was back in March, just before I started blogging again, and I realised only this week that I hadn’t posted ANY of the photos, and oh my god, how terrible, because they still make me laugh.

A true diva such as Lola Pug requires a bit of a splash on her birthday (11 years, dears – where has the time gone?!?), so the menus were planned, the (two) guests were invited, the party hats were unearthed, and the celebrations BEGAN!

Well. The photobooth was set up, is what I mean to say.

DSC_1065

Lola P is really *such* a pro.

The crazy and overwhelming joy felt in the photobooth was only amplified when the Fuppies came over and joined the party.

DSC_1079

Can you feel it?

Can you feel the love and joy and complete celebration?

I throw such amazing pug parties.

DSC_1093

Happy belated birthday, my little Bean.

I love you more than I ever thought possible.

And boy, do you ever look fetching in pink.

Pug Squad Goals!

I do my best to keep Lola Pug’s social life as active as she can manage. She has her besties, who we travel far and wide to see, but I also think it’s important to introduce her to new friends, just in case there is a friendship spark there for her.

So when the opportunity arose to go and see two of her BFF’s, Miso and his sister, Leia, as WELL as a couple of new friends, I jumped!

Oh, hai, guys! What’s up? You have a guest over, eh?

IMG_2242

Well, hello, handsome Buddy! Lovely to meet you!

DSC_1932

Um. Lola. There seems to be yet another someone new behind you. You might want to turn around…

DSC_1602

What a funny looking dog! HELLO DOZER!

DSC_1623

Needless to say, we humans all sort of gently and collectively lost our minds when Dozer walked in. The dogs were rather blasé, but they kept their eyes on us as their new friend snuffled around and indicated that he clearly had the charm (and treat radar) thing down pat.

DSC_1635

So what else am I going to do but try to get a group shot?!?

SQUAD GOALS!

As expected, it was easier said than done.

DSC_1776

Ever the consummate professional, Lola stayed on her mark the entire time, while chaos reigned around her.

DSC_1778

DSC_1787

Maybe more a bit more space, a bit more time, and a bit more jam (Dozer likes jam), and we’ll have better luck next time.

I could write forever about how fascinating it was to watch the dogs interact with Dozer, and how *different* pigs are from dogs – and how when you look into Dozer’s eyes, you see clearly that there is a complex, intelligent, emotional being inside that little pig body…

…but this is all about short adventures and photos, and besides, it’s time for a nap.

DSC_1916

Thank you for coming by to visit, sir! The pugs and Buddy and the humans all really enjoyed meeting you, and thank you for being such a patient and sweet little gentleman.

Now. How am I going to top THIS for Lola Pug’s ongoing adventures?

I’ve clearly got some work ahead of me.

**If you’re curious about the snazzy harnesses, collars, and bowties in the photos, those are made by the awesome Peachy Keen Pets. Dozer is the latest model for the line, so keep your eyes peeled for more photos of him on the PKP page, as well as my photography Instagram!**

National Puppy Day!

Oh, my! It’s been *forever* since we have posted, and we miss this blog!

So we’re back – with new ideas that will be rolling out over the coming weeks, and new photos and adventures to share with you.

But today…well, what better day to come back than National Puppy Day!

P1010167

LP is a senior now, but I love her “happy hairs” (as Chubbs’s mum calls the grey), and I thank the powers that be every day for this little girl.

We are SO looking forward to hearing from you again and to sharing our adventures!

And please write with any comments or feedback or suggestions! We LOVE hearing from you.

Equality, Love, Pride, Pug

We will get back to the continuing adventures of Lola Pug and Nelly next Sunday, but today, let’s take a moment to celebrate love and equality, Lola Pug style…

To our neighbours to the south – FINALLY! And congratulations.

Up in Canada, we’ve been celebrating equal rights for marriage since 2005, but this announcement in the US makes us very happy, both for our friends who can now celebrate equality in their home country, and for those to whom basic human rights have long been withheld. (see article 16: http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/)

More work is needed for so many more people, but what a long-overdue step forward.

So we tip our hats as we celebrate Pride Week up in Lola’s (now rainy) hometown…

…and, more importantly, we get that treat out of our pocket to give to Lola for enduring the crazy hats and photo posing that she had to endure.

Love all around!

The Easter Puggie

IT’S HOLIDAY TIME!

And at Casa Lola, there’s only ONE thing to do on a holiday…

DSC_0774

I love how into the spirit of things she gets.

But never fear, Pug, there’s *always* something in it for you, too.

DSC_0777

Lola and I stick to the fun bits of most holidays, and for me, Easter is all about bunnies and chicks and chocolate and egg hunts and the promise of spring. So what’s not to love?

But back to the egg hunts.

The chocolate is for me, not for LP, so this morning, I thought someone would enjoy getting her breakfast in a slightly more fun way.

Eggs filled with kibble were hidden at pug eye level…

DSC_0783

DSC_0785

…and I set the pug bunny loose to see if she could sniff out her treats.

DSC_0791

Lola Pug not only found the eggs, but she also very quickly figured out that stomping on them made them crack open and spill forth their breakfasty goodness.

DSC_0796

Eight Easter eggs later…

DSC_0800

Not only was breakfast served, but we had a total riot running around Casa Lola looking for eggs, hunting for spilled kibble and knocking all sorts of things over.

DSC_0812

So perhaps the dressing up part isn’t so bad when you consider all of the fun that comes with it.

DSC_0806

Happy Easter, Happy Passover and happy hunting to all of our friends today!

Bowen Island Pug

Lola Pug has high expectations of her mama, and venturing to the other side of the country simply isn’t enough to keep her interested and happy, so when we got an invitation to travel *slightly* further abroad, we jumped on it.

Well. We jumped on a ferry, to be more precise.

After a short hop across a calm, cold, stretch of ocean, we found ourselves on a gorgeous little enclave of an island, and on a welcoming and happy doorstep.

Hey, Lola…Welcome to Bowen Island!

Turn around, honey…who is that coming out to greet you?

With a sniff, a happy bum wiggle, and a few little kisses, Roxy welcomed us to her new and beyond beautiful home.

It was as if the two best friends had never been apart.

Without any delay, we all piled into the car to catch the sunset from the local beach.

We arrived just as the heartiest of the locals were wrapping up the annual Island Polar Bear Dip, so we were gratefully able to warm ourselves by the remnants of their bonfire.

Well. Lola Pug and I warmed ourselves. Roxy kept herself warm by busily scrounging around the beach for leftover hot dog motes.

Busted, babe.

The sun started to set, and all was well with the world.

It was suddenly quite easy to understand why Roxy and her people had succumbed to the siren call of island life.

We bundled ourselves up and headed back to the house to warm ourselves by another fire to get the cold ocean air out of our bones. But not before a look back at a gorgeous end to a happy day of travel and reuniting with dear friends.

Bowen Island, it’s a pleasure to meet you!

Now. Time to warm up and rest up for our ongoing adventures.

Pug Claus 2014

Lola Pug and I are BIG fans of Christmas, so around this time of year, we absolutely MUST head down to meet Mr. Claus, himself, when he comes into town.

Fortunately for us, Santa has a soft spot for rescue dogs, so he made a special visit this year to the annual Pugalug Pug Rescue Pug Claus celebration.

So many pugs came out to meet Santa and spend the afternoon showing off their festive outfits, all while raising much needed funds for pug rescue.

This little guy is a rescue from a few years back – can you even stand how well he rocks that bow tie and suit?!? (and how about that cool shirt on his dad!)

Remember this little charmer from last month’s Pugoween event? (Hint: She was the taco!) She’s grown a bit since then, and clearly I can’t stay away from her gorgeousness. The camera loves her, no?

Lola’s somehow actual relative (we’ll say he’s a cousin), Higgins, was there with his people. He was looking stately and handsome, despite his people’s best attempt to make him look jolly and festive.

…the happiness…the cuteness….

Josephine was all-eyes on her mama, Mrs. Claus…

I would have just handed her all of the sardine snacks in my hand…proof that her mama clearly has WAY more willpower than I do.

I mean LOOK AT THIS FACE!

But as fun as it is to mingle and socialise, the Man of the Hour was upstairs, and in a rare moment of excitement and affection, Lola welcomed Santa with a BIG and clearly welcomed kiss…

…and then proceeded to whisper all of her hopes and dreams for Christmas and the New Year into his ear.

The pug who is usually Little Miss Wriggles in anyone else’s arms was as comfy as anything in Santa’s lap.

He’s kind of a special dude that way, I guess.

We had such a fun time, and all funds raised are headed to help pugs like little Blossom here find love and health and a brand new life. If you’re looking to donate to a great cause this holiday season, I highly recommend Pugalug, by the way. They are a group of amazing, experienced and committed rescuers, and they are 100% volunteer.

Friends, family, love and giving back. What more could Christmas possibly be about?

Thank you to Steven Chung for the gorgeous formal Santa portrait at the end of the blog post!
