Rooster Chinese New Year Pug!

Lola Pug is in a bit of a quiet period of her life right now, so we couldn’t celebrate Chinese New Year the way I had planned to, but we shall perhaps make up for that during her birthday week in March.

I mean – Lola IS a pug, which means her Chinese ancestors would be celebrating, plus, she’s a Rooster, for goodness sake!

So we had to do a *little* dressing up in between naps, right?

We’ve been having fun reading about the year ahead from Lainey’s mum, aka the Chinese Squawking Chicken… Lainey Gossip’s Year of the Rooster Predictions.

I’m apparently supposed to watch out for Lola P’s emotional well-being this year. I might have already missed the mark with the cheongsam, so I’ll clearly have to plan our celebrations wisely.

GUNG HAY FAT CHOY! and love to everyone, especially Roosters like Lola, out there!

Canada Day 2016!

A good friend reminded me of this Lolapug.com post from 2013, and I love it so much, I had to repost it today.

I mean – there’s really nothing more Canadian than celebrating our own day on a dock up in cottage country, right?

HAPPY CANADA DAY, EVERYONE!

As a friend of Lola Pug’s so aptly says, “Dignity. Dignity above all”.

Belated Pug Birthday!

I carry all of the blame for this.

Lola P’s birthday was back in March, just before I started blogging again, and I realised only this week that I hadn’t posted ANY of the photos, and oh my god, how terrible, because they still make me laugh.

A true diva such as Lola Pug requires a bit of a splash on her birthday (11 years, dears – where has the time gone?!?), so the menus were planned, the (two) guests were invited, the party hats were unearthed, and the celebrations BEGAN!

Well. The photobooth was set up, is what I mean to say.

Lola P is really *such* a pro.

The crazy and overwhelming joy felt in the photobooth was only amplified when the Fuppies came over and joined the party.

Can you feel it?

Can you feel the love and joy and complete celebration?

I throw such amazing pug parties.

Happy belated birthday, my little Bean.

I love you more than I ever thought possible.

And boy, do you ever look fetching in pink.

Pug Squad Goals!

I do my best to keep Lola Pug’s social life as active as she can manage. She has her besties, who we travel far and wide to see, but I also think it’s important to introduce her to new friends, just in case there is a friendship spark there for her.

So when the opportunity arose to go and see two of her BFF’s, Miso and his sister, Leia, as WELL as a couple of new friends, I jumped!

Oh, hai, guys! What’s up? You have a guest over, eh?

IMG_2242

Well, hello, handsome Buddy! Lovely to meet you!

DSC_1932

Um. Lola. There seems to be yet another someone new behind you. You might want to turn around…

DSC_1602

What a funny looking dog! HELLO DOZER!

DSC_1623

Needless to say, we humans all sort of gently and collectively lost our minds when Dozer walked in. The dogs were rather blasé, but they kept their eyes on us as their new friend snuffled around and indicated that he clearly had the charm (and treat radar) thing down pat.

DSC_1635

So what else am I going to do but try to get a group shot?!?

SQUAD GOALS!

As expected, it was easier said than done.

DSC_1776

Ever the consummate professional, Lola stayed on her mark the entire time, while chaos reigned around her.

DSC_1778

DSC_1787

Maybe more a bit more space, a bit more time, and a bit more jam (Dozer likes jam), and we’ll have better luck next time.

I could write forever about how fascinating it was to watch the dogs interact with Dozer, and how *different* pigs are from dogs – and how when you look into Dozer’s eyes, you see clearly that there is a complex, intelligent, emotional being inside that little pig body…

…but this is all about short adventures and photos, and besides, it’s time for a nap.

DSC_1916

Thank you for coming by to visit, sir! The pugs and Buddy and the humans all really enjoyed meeting you, and thank you for being such a patient and sweet little gentleman.

Now. How am I going to top THIS for Lola Pug’s ongoing adventures?

I’ve clearly got some work ahead of me.

**If you’re curious about the snazzy harnesses, collars, and bowties in the photos, those are made by the awesome Peachy Keen Pets. Dozer is the latest model for the line, so keep your eyes peeled for more photos of him on the PKP page, as well as my photography Instagram!**

Equality, Love, Pride, Pug

We will get back to the continuing adventures of Lola Pug and Nelly next Sunday, but today, let’s take a moment to celebrate love and equality, Lola Pug style…

To our neighbours to the south – FINALLY! And congratulations.

Up in Canada, we’ve been celebrating equal rights for marriage since 2005, but this announcement in the US makes us very happy, both for our friends who can now celebrate equality in their home country, and for those to whom basic human rights have long been withheld. (see article 16: http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/)

More work is needed for so many more people, but what a long-overdue step forward.

So we tip our hats as we celebrate Pride Week up in Lola’s (now rainy) hometown…

…and, more importantly, we get that treat out of our pocket to give to Lola for enduring the crazy hats and photo posing that she had to endure.

Love all around!

The Easter Puggie

IT’S HOLIDAY TIME!

And at Casa Lola, there’s only ONE thing to do on a holiday…

DSC_0774

I love how into the spirit of things she gets.

But never fear, Pug, there’s *always* something in it for you, too.

DSC_0777

Lola and I stick to the fun bits of most holidays, and for me, Easter is all about bunnies and chicks and chocolate and egg hunts and the promise of spring. So what’s not to love?

But back to the egg hunts.

The chocolate is for me, not for LP, so this morning, I thought someone would enjoy getting her breakfast in a slightly more fun way.

Eggs filled with kibble were hidden at pug eye level…

DSC_0783

DSC_0785

…and I set the pug bunny loose to see if she could sniff out her treats.

DSC_0791

Lola Pug not only found the eggs, but she also very quickly figured out that stomping on them made them crack open and spill forth their breakfasty goodness.

DSC_0796

Eight Easter eggs later…

DSC_0800

Not only was breakfast served, but we had a total riot running around Casa Lola looking for eggs, hunting for spilled kibble and knocking all sorts of things over.

DSC_0812

So perhaps the dressing up part isn’t so bad when you consider all of the fun that comes with it.

Happy Easter, Happy Passover and happy hunting to all of our friends today!

Bedstede Pugs on Bowen Island

To mark Lola Pug’s final full day on Bowen Island (at least on this trip), we took the pugs on a lovely, chilly beach walk, then bundled them up into the car to get a few provisions in town before heading home to warm up.

Never one to be outwardly impressed with much of anything, Lola Pug really takes all of her adventures in stride.

A quick stop off at my new favourite place on the Island…

…and we were all ready to head home. Even Miss Roxy was pining for a nap.

And I do think that Lola Pug was dreaming of warmer, drier places as she watched the goings on.

Now, Roxy’s people have something very special in their home that is a *perfect* way to warm up and relax after a winter adventure, and I couldn’t wait to get back to the house to try it out.

In our last post, I asked how YOU like to warm up, and both Hailey and Zaphod and our Southern Fried Pugs friends said that warming up by a fire (with bonus marshmallows) are their favourite things to do…but at Hacienda RoxSea, there is this amazing little nook that I had been ACHING to jump into.

This thing on the left isn’t a painting on the wall…and it’s not exactly a room….

…it’s an honest to goodness sleeping nook!

Bedstedes are Dutch, and I think they might just be the best thing I’ve ever seen in a house. THANK YOU, NETHERLANDS!

The pugs wholeheartedly agreed with me. Although that kind of makes sense, as it was the Dutch who first brought pugs over to Europe, and…wait…were bedstedes made specifically FOR cuddling with pugs? Or maybe just for pugs, themselves.

They might well have been, because Lola wasn’t too thrilled at the prospect of me invading her private mattress room.

With a little bit of rearranging, and the addition of a blanket along with the lovely Roxy…

…and maybe a little bit of wool for me to play with, we all settled in for a most excellent coze.

The lure of the cozy bedstede is so powerful, that Roxy’s Dad decided to join us, and we had a glorious time reading books, cuddling the pugs, chatting away and warming up.

Well. Some of us had a glorious time.

Oh, Lola, sharing isn’t *that* miserable, is it?

I have an awful lot to live up to now, as I believe I will now be expected to construct a bedstede at Casa Lola on our return. But only big enough for *one* pug, right, Lola Bean?

But we have a few more adventures to go on before we can rest at home, little one.

Stay tuned – The Pug is on the move!

Pug Mail!

Lola Pug and I took a little break from blogging to deal with a few medical issues that came our way, but I am pleased to report that the little monkey came through everything with great spirit and we’re finally back and excited to share our continuing adventures and stories.

On the medical side, LP is fine. She’s a bit of a marvel, as she has been diagnosed with a few unlikely, but thankfully likely-not-life-shortening conditions, as well as some hopefully resolved dental issues, but all is well once again in our world.

After a few months of worry, it was a great surprise to find a package in our mailbox this week!

Lola Pug always knows when a piece of mail is for her, and she dove down to sniff out who it came from and what it might contain….

Sometimes my human hands come in handy, so I obliged….

It’s always lovely when cards come properly addressed. So many people just don’t understand how to do this anymore.

The Pug seemed to be slightly apprehensive about the contents of the letter…

…it was a card and a gift from Angel Payton’s people!

The card said that this was a very special gift from Payton’s own personal collection. Now Payton meant the WORLD to her Mum and Dad, and even though Lola and Payton never met, we feel they are soul sisters, so when something comes to us from her memorial collection, we know it’s something to cherish and love dearly.

…and to laugh our collective human butts off at.

My darling Lola Pug, you do, indeed, have issues. So many issues. As does your mama.

Thank you, Payton’s people, for sending us such a special gift and memory from your wee one’s life, and thank you for the laughs. Well. I thank you. Lola might need a bit more time to come around to the awesomeness of this gift.

Laughter really is the best medicine.

At least it is for pug mamas!

Pugoween – Part the Second

The second Pugoween event turned out to be an even bigger (and funnier) event than the first one.

I wasn’t able to capture all of the amazing costumes, but if you buckle up for a it of a ride, here’s a taste of what to expect if you get a few dozen pugs and their people together at Halloween to raise money for rescue.

Candy Corn Witch pugs…

…Lobster Pugs who aren’t really lobsters…and aren’t really pugs, either…

…same goes for the Taco Pug…

…and the little Genie! (seriously – check out her NAILS, people!)

This little doll was dressed as a roadie for her beloved uncle’s band…

…what more need be said?

Another Genie Pug!

You can’t deny the awesomeness of a great outfit.

Our Candy Corn Witch pug won a prize in the costume contest, and she seemed to be pretty stoked about it…

…although little Magnolia the Sock Monkey seemed to feel a bit slighted.

…the pug who came dressed as a bath sponge did well, also. I think that his yellow rubber ducky had been purloined by the time I got to take his photo….

But it was the giant Pug Spider and his sibling the giant Pug Fly who took home first place honours in the costume contest, and it’s easy to see why.

Arachnaphobes BEWARE!

Lola took a moment to congratulate Pug Fly on his win. …at least I’m assuming that’s what she was doing.

Little Peggy the Ladybug wasn’t too impressed with the event.

…okay. She wasn’t too impressed with ME. She had a great time at the event.

Lions MUST wear pearls, don’t you know.

Formal photos were taken upstairs.

This little gal, Raisin, is a recent puppymill rescue, and a good portion of the funds raised will help with her upcoming medical costs. Poor darling has had a very rough go of it until now, but I think she knows she’s safe now.

Little men wore their best ties.

And some pugs preferred to hang out with their humans.

Best seat in the house, no?

Peachy Keen Pets was there to sell their fabulous harnesses, collars and leashes – with a portion of sales donated to the rescue!

With raffle prizes awarded, contests judged and pug portraits taken, the happy pugs started to slow down and give the universal signal for “can we please go home now?” to their people…

It was clear that everyone had a simply marvellous time.

But even Lola Pug was ready to call it a day. So many pugs and costumes to dream about on her homeward bound nap.

A total blast for pugs and their people, alike, and all for a fantastic cause. It was a of pugs helping pugs event, I suppose…with a little bit of human intervention thrown in, of course.

Until next Halloween….
