Sunbeam Pug

Aside from the cooler temperatures, there really isn’t much that The Pug appreciates about winter anymore.

It gets TOO cold for her older little bones to handle, and then add in the slush and the salt and the wind and the tonnes of wet snow, and I have a very grumpy little soul on my hands.

img_8493-jpg-2

The one thing winter does bring us, however (aside from relief from those 40 degree summer days), is Lola’s beloved sunbeam.

When I see the sunbeam come in the window, I pull out one of Lola’s beds, and position it just so before I call her over to let her know her winter bestie has arrived.

img_8458-jpg-2

Someone wanted company in the sunbeam the other day, though, and she wouldn’t stay on her bed unless I was there with her, so I picked up my work and…

…well, I’ve had tea in worse places.

I think.

Snooze well, little one. Mama is right here beside you.

Pug in a Hammock

This summer (like last summer) has been hooooot and sticky here, which is never good for pugs, let alone a black senior pug with many medical specialists on her payroll.

Which is all to say that when LP and I received a fabulous invitation to go and hang in the breezy countryside out near a (different) lake, we jumped in the car and drove, baby!

I had glorious plans to visit the beach, explore the town, and eat lots of baked goods, but when we reached our destination, this charming oasis greeted us….

IMG_4861

Notice the hammock?

Yah. So did I. Immediately.

Lola wasn’t so much a fan of the ‘Mmock at first…

IMG_4945

IMG_4916

But I kept hauling her up beside me, and she eventually found her comfortable spot…

IMG_4910_2

…like, REALLY found her comfortable spot….

IMG_4972

IMG_4955

So those plans that I had? To visit the beach and the town and to eat lots of baked goods?

Not so much.

But I don’t think that Lola Pug was too disappointed about that.

IMG_4921

So now I have yet another task on my hands.

A pug hammock.

Wish me luck, possums…and please share any tips or tricks if you have made your own dog hammock! (because who hasn’t??)

Also, special thanks to Olive and Oscar (these rascally souls here) for letting Lola Pug and I use their country getaway place (and their hammock) for a few days.

Sunbeam Dream Pug

This winter has been long and very cold – the coldest on record in Lola Pug’s hometown. The brutal cold means that The Pug and I haven’t really been able to get out and about on any adventures in our favourite place – the great outdoors.

But for all of the cold, it has been crisp, remarkably slush-free (dark and slushy winters are the WORST), and it has been bright. Oh, so bright. Sunshine almost every day.

But there comes a breaking point for everyone, and The Pug reached her’s about a month ago.

IMG_3111

We tried everything to keep ourselves amused indoors. Squirrel log…stuffy toys…Karateo Dog…even indoor disk throwing, just to get a taste of remembrance of warmer days past.

IMG_3438

But both Lola and I eventually slumped into a bit of a winter blargh, and a certain little pug became a master of her new, favourite winter sport…sunbeam basking.

First, you have to find a sunbeam…

DSC_0200

…then you have to position yourself juuuuust so…

DSC_0201

…and once you have achieved the optimal angle…let the basking begin….

DSC_0217

A couple of days ago, I noticed that the temperature outside was reaching a less face-breaking level, so I woke a disbelieving HRH up from her sunbeam splendour…

IMG_3624

…and carried her outside. I found a spot where the temperature and the sunbeams were juuuust right…

IMG_3595

…and all was once again right with the world.

It feels a bit too early to welcome a new season in, so we will simply say YAY for warmer weather, and OH MY GOD, FINALLY we can go outside again.

Even Lola’s friend, Donald, has a bounce in his step with the warmer weather.

IMG_3503

It is coming, my poppets. Spring – with all of it’s mud and glory – is just around the corner.

Get your raincoats ready!

…but we won’t focus on that just yet.

Time to find a sunbeam to dream in.

Until next week!

Florida Pug

So have you had time to take a guess at what Lola Pug got up to on her exciting trip to the land of palm trees and manatees?

When we last left her, HRH was rather happily soaking up some much needed vitamin D…

…but it wasn’t ALL about sunshine and relaxing.

Lola Pug was active and sprightly…

…she moved around the pool like a sunflower capturing the optimal sunshine angles…

…she went for exciting walks that involved a lot of exercise…

…she entertained friends and listened to what were clearly some thrilling discussions…

All in all, I think I had a very happy pug on my hands.

But even the best of things must come to an end. I broke the news to Lola Pug gently, just as her Auntie was giving her a post-yogurt skritch…

It’s time to go home, sweetie.

Our visit was short, but it was just what we needed to recharge our batteries and feel a bit of warmth on our skin before returning to the long winter ahead.

Bye bye, beautiful ocean and beaches and sunshine…

…and hello winter.

You might be cold and frosty, dear city, but it warms my heart to see you again.

I might be the only one who feels that way, though.

IMG_2994

So I guess I had better get my thinking cap on and line up some new adventures before someone cries mutiny, and teaches herself how to book her own flights.

Wishing everyone in the North American snowbelt many warm, palm tree dreams this frosty weekend!

Now, little pug. What are we going to get up to next….

Jet Set Pug

When last we left you, The Pug and I were leaving our dear friends on Bowen Island, British Columbia, and hurtling back through the air to Casa Lola.

But we weren’t headed home to rest. Nope. Not *quite* yet.

No sooner had we opened our front door and emptied our suitcases than we packed up again and headed straight back to the airport.

Where to this time, Pug?

Lola Pug really wasn’t impressed with my insistence that we embrace the jet-setting lifestyle, but she soon changed her mind when we landed at our next destination.

After a quick watering of the flowers, a certain someone ran out to her favourite spot in the entire state…

…and staked her claim on the spot that I suspected she would basically remain in for the duration of our trip.

Hey, no judgment here, Pug.

In fact, I’d advise you to soak up those winter rays as much as you can. We have a lot of winter left, and we have to grab our sunshine when we can!

We both proceeded to take a good, long nap, and got ourselves rested up for the week that lay ahead in this magical winter land of palm trees, geckos and sunshine.

Our adventures down south continue next week! Can you guess what we got up to on this trip?

Shark Week Pug

I have long held a deep respect and fascination (and a healthy fear) of sharks. I own a few shark documentary DVD’s, as well as a couple of books about the creatures. I also am terrified of swimming in sharky-waters, but that’s not why we’re here today.

In honour of Shark Week (whatever that actually is), I have gone into the Lola Pug photo vaults back to around this time last year when we got together with The Griffies to celebrate…sharks?

DSC_0035

Well, Lola Pug, for one, was not impressed, and Clara and Bosco, although curious, seemed to be giving her a bit of space to get used to her transformation.

Good shark face, though, little one.

DSC_0060

And I’m sorry, Roxy, you’re simply WAY too cute to be a menacing shark.

With the help of his human, Bentley tried his best to put on a scary face.

DSC_0115

…opposite effect, dude.

So Bentley and Clara tried their hand at being table sharks, instead.

DSC_0142

…while Osgood took the wise path, and hid.

DSC_0130

…or he was pretending to be a crocodile, it’s hard to say.

So, Happy Shark Week (can we have Octopus Week next?) to everyone, I guess, and remember… It’s better to be a shark…

Shark Pug

…than it is to be a hotdog.

So sayeth The Pug.

Coastal Friends

Lola Pug’s lifelong BFF and cousin, Roxy, is moving to the other side of the country shortly (cue the sadfaces at Casa Lola), so we invited the Little Miss and her people up to Lola’s northern playground for a weekend of adventuring and bonding before the big move.

One of the first things we all must do when faced with outdoor adventures is put on our hats and sunscreen, so Roxy reminded us all to do so before we set out….

The first order of the day was to have a little boating adventure, which Roxy took to like a …duck to water?

Lola, being used to such travel, was a little bit less impressed, but that also might have something to do with the fact that she’s rather grown out of her life jacket a little bit. (Middle age spread happens to the best of us, baby).

Not only did we have gorgeous sunshine and water, but we had jumping fish and giant aeries to be on the lookout for.

Once our not-quite-three-hour tour was done, we were all rather toasty, so we thought we’d bring the pugs to the water to cool down a bit.

Roxy has always been a bit of a water baby, so she was quite pleased with the refreshment.

Epic and proud, babygirl, epic and proud.

Lola, however, has *never* had a fondness for water OR being wet, so imagine my shock and temporary horror when THIS happened…

Yup.

She stood in the water in a dreamy state, thoroughly enjoying every soothing moment of the cooling wetness.

When I finally coaxed her out of the water to come up on a rock with her cousin to watch some passing boats…

…she turned around and walked back INTO the water for a bit more spa action.

Which prompted me to call out… “WHERE IS MY PUG, AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH HER???”

Oh.

We’re all back to normal now, I see….

Yes. That’s likely goose poop she’s smearing her wet face in.

That seemed to be enough adventuring for one day for these two, so we settled in for a little nap on the porch together.

Lola was a bit miffed that Roxy got her favourite chair…

…but we do these things for our friends. Especially when we might not see them again for a long, long time.

Love and kisses, little Roxy Pug. Here’s hoping we will get a chance to come and visit you in your new (and terribly exciting) coastal home before long.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I remember receiving my first Mother’s Day flowers the year that Lola Pug was born. Mother’s Day arrived that year when The Pug was still with her pug mama, too young to be with me in her forever home, but that didn’t make the day any less special for me.

Black pug lies in a sunbeam with a suspicious look on her face

The thought of this little face, and thinking back to everything we’ve been through together over the past nine years makes every Mother’s Day special for me, even when they’ve been really tough to celebrate.

Here’s to as many more happy adventures and bright and sunny Mother’s Days as the Fates will allow us, baby girl….

Pug mama walking her black pug on a beach at low tide

And to all the loving Mums out there who have kids of all kinds, Happy Mother’s Day!

Spring Sunbeam

Sometimes you have a week that just takes you by the throat and shakes you, and The Pug and I have had just that kind of week, albeit in very different ways.

A little bit of rest and recuperation on her part, and some tea and laughter on my side, and things seem to be coming back to what passes for normal in this crazy house.

More on all that from Lola’s side in next week’s post, but in the meantime, someone has managed to find one of the first sunbeams of Spring…

I am one with the sunbeam, mama.

…and I think I might have to join her.

Lola Pug suggests that you all find a sunbeam today, and nestle down in it – even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Happy Sunday, Happy Nap Day, and Happy Spring!

(We seem to be missing the Pug Thoughts feature today. I’ll figure it all out, but in the meantime, just imagine that Lola is meditating and that her mind is a peaceful, empty room…filled with kibble, of course.)

Long Weekend, Pug Style

If The Pug had her druthers, we would be sleeping in (after our 5:00am breakfast call, of course) until about noon every day.

Fortunately, on a long weekend, I am able to entertain these preferences, and we do tend to turn into sloths when the opportunity presents itself.

Behold…The Coze….

If the pugs ever do want to take over the world (as I suspect they are planning to do), all they’ll have to do is fall asleep on the humans. Their soft snoring and warm, fuzzy bodies render everyone but the most hardened and heartless people inert, immobile and so dreamily sleepy.

For all of our friends in Ontario today, Happy Family Day! And…would someone mind bringing me some tea? I’m rather cozy here, and I can’t seem to move my legs to get out of bed….
